Cheerful ○ Naive ○ Passionate Bloodthirsty • Caustic • Cruel

Her childlike innocence and naivete belies her true, malevolent nature; one could say the girl has a borderline split personality, though that stems more from her struggles to contain her underlying urges with her own sense of character. Lainey resents the malicious cruelty beneath her happy exterior, and harbors an intense dislike of the dark feelings she occasionally falls into when she lets her guard down. The desire for blood, death, carnage.. It's always there, lurking beneath the surface; a terrible influence promising joy and pleasure.. and it's oftentimes all she can do to keep herself from succumbing to those hated urges.

Despite the nature that courses through her veins, she has a high sense of justice and a deep-seated desire for vengeance, instilled by what had happened in her early adolescence. Her bright smile would quickly give way to a shadowed glare at the slightest hint of bullying, cheerful demeanor melting into a vitriolic personality. Spikes of adrenaline, such as from battle, would batter her will in keeping the unsavory side of her character at bay, and oftentimes a heavy scent of freshly split blood would tear most of her defenses down like paper. Normally, though, she's moderately good at sequestering away her crueler side, sometimes even convincing herself that she's not such a monster as she cheerfully digs into her food or pounces on someone for conversation.

A ʙ ɪ ʟ ɪ ᴛ ɪ ᴇ s   /   P ᴏ ᴡ ᴇ ʀ s
:

  • Enhanced speed [ +1 ] -- a passive ability that triggers with rain, or when she’s in a moderately-sized body of water, such as a fountain, pool, or beach shore. A puddle wouldn't exactly work unless it was a deep or large one, and the enhancement doesn't last when she steps out of said body of water. Frequently dipping in and out in a short span of time would fatigue her muscles.

  • Accelerated healing -- her self-healing ability speeds up twice as fast while the injury is submerged underwater. Not very efficient for large-scale wounds that takes months to heal, like a broken bone, since she’ll pretty much have to be stuck in a pool or bathtub the entire time to gain the accelerated effect.

  • Shapeshift -- while she can't manage a full equine form unless she were near the waters of her home loch in Scotland, Lainey can manage a partial shift into her demonic counterpart. Her ears will morph into fish-like fins and her lung capacity will increase.

    • Sensitive hearing -- while (partially) transformed, Miren's hearing range is increased to capture the higher and lower decibels outside of human hearing, to catch the range of sounds one would be able to hear beneath the water. Unfortunately, in a human city, the heightened hearing would probably be more detrimental to a girl unused to the commotion, and loud noises would make her flinch and lose focus. In a quieter setting, it would be useful to catch someone sneaking up on her- but in a quieter setting, she'd most likely be in her normal human form.

    • Increased lung capacity -- mainly utilized to stay underwater for longer periods of time. Underwater combat would be preferred, as she could most likely outlast another person.

W ᴇ ᴀ ᴘ ᴏ ɴ s   /   F ɪ ɢ ʜ ᴛ ɪ ɴ ɢ   S ᴛ ʏ ʟ ᴇ
:

  • Bladed tonfa -- Crafted of cold steel cooled by the waters of her loch, the blades are typically held in a backward grip that allows the unsharpened side to follow along her forearm.
Though Lainey herself prefers.. not to fight, when she can, the all-too-frequent times she finds herself falling under the spell of battlelust reveal the side of her that aches for combat. As IX, she favors quick slicing attacks with her blades and kicks- in particular, of the spinning variety that generates momentum for a harsher effect. She tends to utilize her speed to her advantage in a hit-and-run type of combat style, preferring to dodge attacks or parry/block them with her tonfa when she can't hop out of range.

W ᴇ ᴀ ᴋ ɴ ᴇ s s ᴇ s:

Opponents with:
  • Higher endurance -- much of her combat style is wearing down her enemy until they leave larger openings for attacks. Someone who can outlast her would make for a tough opponent, as she's dependent upon her speed to take people down.

  • Greater physical strength -- since she doesn't quite have the strength to fully parry, block, or much less take a hit from them. Light to moderate attacks she can fend off okay, but the harder hitting opponents can do a lot of damage even if they don't land a solid hit on her.

  • Higher agility -- she depends a lot on her speed, so enemies who can match her or are faster will overwhelm her a little bit. She doesn't have much skill, with her low experience in a full combat situation, so she wouldn't really be able to fend off a faster opponent.

  • Ranged attacks -- she has absolutely zero ranged abilities, so people who utilize anything outside of close combat would be able to get in much more hits than she could, since she has to get up close and personal to attack.

  • More skill -- much of her fighting experience comes from attacking the lower dredges of human society -- or defenseless persons such as tourists -- so in terms of hard experience in a prolonged fight or against a skilled opponent, she will very likely lose the battle.

B ᴀ ᴄ ᴋ ɢ ʀ ᴏ ᴜ ɴ ᴅ
:

Born to a full-blooded kelpie mother and a human father, Lainey straddles the line between the social constructs of ‘good’ and ‘bad’, oftentimes struggling to keep herself from succumbing to the lure of death. To witness a being’s last breath is a solemn event -- but to be the cause of it?

Absolutely exhilarating.

Just barely a toddler, she lost her parents to an attack of prejudice; human and kelpie were not meant to love each other, and the demons especially were not meant to enjoy the company of humans for the sake of company. Those who expressed interest in the human race were shunned, and those who dared to act on those feelings would be unmercifully slaughtered. Taken from her loving home, the babe was taught the culture and mindset of the water demons, and quickly rose to the top of her class and year-group as time passed. She took to the teachings like a duck to water, absorbing and learning the way of the kelpie at an impressive rate that forced even the demon in charge of the raid on her birth parents to grudgingly acknowledge the girl might actually be kelpie after all.

She was not told much of her mother. Her father wasn’t spoken of, at all.

Of course, being at the top of her class, she was the first of her peers to take a human life -- that of a young child who’d wandered away from her parents -- and moments after she’d witnessed the girl’s last muted struggles for breath beneath the water, Lainey’s human side kicked in and overwhelmed the halfling with a sense of remorse. Stubbornly, she pushed the strange feeling away and continued as she always had, throwing herself into her role with a zeal that affected even her peers. Unbeknownst to them, each death she racked up filled her with a heavy sense of guilt that lasted longer as her tally rose. To combat such bewildering emotions, she faced down death more and more often- to the point where the adults whispered to each other that it was becoming something of an obsession. Of course, that was a good thing- but such high death rates in a concentrated area of the human population would affect their hunting.

It would not be until she managed a human form for the first time that the woman who’d taken her in pulled her aside and drew out a small book, claiming that it belonged to her mother-- her mother, who had fallen in love with a human man. And suddenly, those intense feelings of regret had a source; and she disliked it. Angry at her caretaker, she stumbled off on ungainly human legs, despising how lost she felt at the discovery. It would be a long while before she accepted her surrogate mother’s offer to teach her to read her mother’s journal, and even longer before she found herself shifting away from the mindset of the kelpie and leaning towards a fascination with humans. The adults who held to culture suspected nothing, only breathing a sigh of relief when their overzealous student seemed to calm down. It would be years before she managed to hold a human form long enough to converse with a true human, and forge a friendship that would last into the older girl’s untimely death just a year later, and onward.

When she had lived twelve winters, Lainey witnessed just how amazingly kelpie a human could be, when a group of drunk men cornered the motley team of sibling tourists and disguised demon. Her best friend’s brother was terminated by a backhand slap that broke his neck when he tried to protect the girls, and her best friend lost her innocence and life in an effort to spare the younger child.

And she snapped.

That was the first night she held a blade; shed blood above surface; killed someone without feeling a shred of remorse; hated the humans she’d come to love. It would be a number of years before her rage dissipated, and the crushing guilt of everything weighed down on her. It was then that she resolved to change, for the first friend she’d ever had- and decided to pay a visit to the deceased girl’s home country of Japan.

It was really unfortunate that the first place she stepped onto ended up being the territory of the Tatakai Club.

:

  • The water element -- it’s where she was born and raised, and her race is tied to it. She absolutely adores the feel of rain hitting her skin, or being partially to fully submerged beneath the water. The abrupt muffling of human noise the moment she falls under the surface calms her, like the breaking of waves upon the shore or rushing water does.

  • Rainstorms, thunderstorms -- any kind of storms that have a lot of water, really. They’re thrilling, to her, and whenever there’s a storm she will almost always be found outside near a body of water, rejoicing in the clashing of the waves or claps of thunder. She loves the tumult -- the natural chaos in itself strikingly beautiful.

  • Human food and drink -- particularly the carbonated ones. She doesn’t mind living off of her natural diet of water weeds and general marine life, but the explosions of flavor that human sustenance provides is another thrill to her that she delights in, intense and absolutely wonderful compared to the oftentimes singular tastes of her marine diet. Carbonated drinks, like pop, are a cherished favorite; the bubbly liquid tickling her throat makes her feel giddy.

  • Anime and manga -- the girl is a hardcore otaku, man. It’s what prompted her to decide to come to Japan in the first place; to visit the birthplace of such a wonderful culture that brought rise to the beautiful stories and art she grew up on, alongside the old Celtic myths and legends.

  • Being drenched in the blood of her opponents after a battle -- though she loathes to admit it. To feel the essence of their life clinging to her skin, staining her clothes, dripping down her body; it gives her a rush of titillating joy like no other, and she resents that part of her that lusts for carnage.

  • Experiencing life as a human, around humans, omg all the humans-- //shot. They’re just so interesting, you know? All the moods, the thoughts, the feelings, the innovations and creativity and cruelty -- it fascinates her.

  • Free diving -- there’s something to be said about being still, about letting go and slowing down as the healing properties so often associated with water wraps her in its silky embrace. The muted silence of a dive calms her down.

D ɪ s ʟ ɪ ᴋ ᴇ s
:

  • Misplacing her headphones -- they act as a sort of block to her true nature, an insulator against the whispering urges to destroy, to kill and maim and ravage.. Without the sounds that come from the waterproof device, her lust for blood is considerably more difficult to resist.

  • The nearly unquenchable bloodlust associated with her true nature -- she despises the part of her that exults in death, feeling an incredible amount of contempt for the joy of battle and violence; when she fails to resist the compelling urges of her true nature, the immense regret and grief over ending someone’s life sends her into a bitter spiral of self-loathing quite unlike her usual cheerful self. It would usually be days before she forgave herself enough to smile again.

  • Bullies -- she despises them; the strong, who prey on the weak. Who should be protecting those who don’t have the strength to. She despises bullies, and, by association, despises herself, too.

  • Alcohol -- if there’s one thing she hates more than herself, it’s alcohol. Well, not so much the alcohol itself, per se.. she does come from a community that enjoys their guinness, after all, but it’s more the loss of inhibition that ample amounts of the substance can do to a person that she intensely dislikes.

  • Rapists -- if there’s one thing she hates the most, it’s the people who have no qualms about forcing themselves on other people. What happened to Sammy and her brother is still fresh in her mind and nightmares, even after the number of years that had passed since then.

A ᴅ ᴅ ɪ ᴛ ɪ ᴏ ɴ ᴀ ʟ   I ɴ ғ ᴏ ʀ ᴍ ᴀ ᴛ ɪ ᴏ ɴ
:

  • Despite appearances, her headphones don’t actually play music, but various sounds of her element; from the soft patter of rain to the tumultuous clashing of waves against rock.

  • She can’t get the water weeds out of her hair; not that she would really want to, and they come out easily enough, but anyone trying would just tire themselves out since they wouldn’t be able to permanently remove them.

  • It is insanely difficult for her to heal from injuries inflicted by silver; it acts as a sort of poison to her bloodstream, rendering her highly likely to die from a large enough cut.

  • She has a strong stomach; the girl could eat anything, and vast amounts of it. She’ll be easily lured away or distracted by the prospect of food, the poor thing. //shot.

  • Because she’s so often, ah, covered in blood, the tips of her hair have a mild lightening in color due to the bleaching effect of the ichor.

  • After spending the majority of her life as a horse, clothes feel weird to her. Don’t pay her any mind if she starts stripping or someth-- /shot. Actually, no, please stop her.

  • She cannot, actually, breathe underwater as a human. She can just hold her breath for a handful of minutes, like a human free diver can.

  • Although she kind of looks it, she is not actually blind in her right eye. Oops. Maybe I should have picked a different color-

  • Her collar is magically attached to her headphones; the combination of those and her cord act as a bridle in disguise. If you have those in your possession, she's your slav-- //shotagain.

I'm sorry this is so long, I got a bit carried away.
My summary of her life didn't end up being a summary, omg-
Did I spell her name wrong on the picture? Crap, I did--
Are you still reading this? You crazy person you.
